Healing Haiti

Current Status:

  • May 20 – 27, 2010 - fourth visit to Haiti to strengthen partnerships and develop collaborative relationships with Haitian government ministries, religious organizations, and medical associations
  • Conducted six, half-day mind-body healing workshops for Red Cross, high school students, the nursing school, and Caritas Haiti
  • Click to read workshop testimonials and blog posts about our visits workshop testimonials
  • Currently leveraging funding to begin large scale training programs

The Center plans to bring our program of population-wide psychological healing to Haiti.

Over the next 4 years we expect to train 1500 Haitian doctors, nurses, mental health professionals, educators, clergy and other community leaders. We will help them to heal their own trauma and to work effectively with Haiti’s hundreds of thousands of traumatized children and adults.

The Center will:

  • work with them as a team to bring our scientifically-validated model of psychological self-care and group support to more than 1,000,000 Haitian children and adults
  • establish programs that will be completely integrated into the health and education system and into local churches and NGOs
  • develop a leadership team that will ensure that this approach will become a sustainable part of care and education throughout Haiti

We will do all this at a cost of $10 - $15 per person served.

Program outcomes which we have repeatedly seen and expect in Haiti include:

  • Decreased levels of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) symptoms
  • Increased quality of life
  • Improved self-esteem
  • Improved resiliency
  • Greater hope for the future

These improvements will be greatest among those who have been most traumatized.
